FAQ
Are you new to WordPress or planning to attend a Bristol WordPress People event for the first time? This FAQ will set you off on the right foot 🦶.
What Happens When I Arrive?
When you arrive at the venue:
- An organiser will usually be near the entrance to say hello
- We’ll let you know where to sit and how the evening will run
- You’re welcome to grab a drink or something to eat (we provide food and soft drinks), find a seat, and settle in
If you’re unsure about anything, just ask — we’re a friendly bunch and happy to help.
Do I Need to Talk to People or Network?
There’s absolutely no pressure to network or speak to anyone if you don’t want to.
Some people like to chat before and after the talks, others prefer to listen quietly and head off afterwards — both are completely fine.
If you do want to talk to people, a simple “Is this your first time too?” works surprisingly well.
What If I’m a Beginner?
That’s totally fine — many people attend because they’re just getting started.
Our talks are designed to be accessible, and questions are always welcome. If something goes over your head, you can:
- Ask during the Q&A
- Chat to the speaker afterwards
- Speak to one of the organisers
Everyone was a beginner once, and WordPress is a big part of many of our working lives, so people are generally happy to help.
What Should I Bring?
You don’t need to bring anything special.
If you like, you can bring:
- A notebook or tablet/phone to take notes
- Questions about your own website or project
Laptops are usually only needed for workshop-style events (and we’ll make that clear in the event details).
What if I Still Feel Unsure?
That’s completely normal — trying something new can feel daunting.
If you have any questions before attending, or you’d like us to keep an eye out for you when you arrive, feel free to contact us in advance via the Contact page and let us know which event you’re coming to.
We’ll do our best to make your first visit a comfortable one.
What Is WordPress, Anyway?
WordPress is software that helps you build and manage websites without needing to be a programmer.
It powers everything from:
- Personal blogs
- Small business websites
- Online shops
- Charity and community sites
- Large news and media sites
In fact, WordPress is used by over 40% of websites on the internet, which makes it the most popular website platform in the world.
What Can You Do With WordPress?
With WordPress, you can:
- Write and publish content
- Design how your site looks using themes and the block editor
- Add features using plugins (like contact forms, SEO tools, or online booking)
- Manage users, comments, and updates
Some people use WordPress as a hobby, some for their business, and some as part of their job in web design, development, marketing, or content.
Do I Need to Be Technical to Use WordPress?
Not at all.
Many people use WordPress without touching any code. You can build and run a site using visual tools and ready-made designs.
That said, WordPress can also be as technical as you want it to be — which is why our meetup includes people with all kinds of backgrounds and skill levels.
Is This Meetup Only for WordPress Experts?
Definitely not.
Bristol WordPress People is for:
- People who are just getting started
- People building their first website
- People running sites for work or clients
- People who develop, design, write, or manage content professionally
If you’re interested in websites, digital skills, or learning how to manage your own site, you’ll fit right in.
Why Is There a WordPress Community?
WordPress is open-source software, which means it’s built and maintained by a global community of volunteers and companies.
Local meetups like Bristol WordPress People are part of that wider community — they exist so people can:
- Learn from each other
- Share experience and ideas
- Get help and encouragement
- Meet others working in similar roles
You don’t even have to contribute to WordPress to attend — just being curious is enough.
